An Ancient Science: Reading the Meaning of Playing Cards
The origins of the deck of playing cards are unknown. The oldest surviving manuscript, that speaks about their real meaning, says they come from Atlantis. Wikipedia says they originate in ancient Egypt and/or China.
Whatever their origins may have been, the truth they reveal is so powerful that it’s embedded in our vocabulary. Even if you have never heard of the truth of these “cards” before, you have surely used expressions from them before.
We often say, for example, “it’s just not in the cards for me.”
Or, we talk about needing to “play our cards right.” And, when we want clarity we say, “put the cards on the table.” Other times we say we don’t want to “get lost in the shuffle.” And then we ask: “what’s the deal anyway?” Or, maybe, “he’s not playing with a full deck.”
In other words, even if we haven’t known the real meaning of these “cards,” their meaning is so powerful we have talked about their meaning without even realizing what we were saying.
The funny thing is these expressions are actually literal expressions. We are all incarnated here with certain “cards to play” and how we “play our cards” determines the kind of life we have.
The Ancient Book of Life
Personally, I don’t like the term “Cartomancy.”
To me, it’s a derogatory term, like the House of Cards. And, anyway, what we are reading from are not “cards” at all, but rather pages in an ancient loose-leave Book.
The ordinary deck of playing cards is actually the ancient Book of Life. Consider the following:
The playing “cards” represent 52 archetypes or symbols of consciousness (plus the Joker). The number 52 is the number of weeks in a year. If we reduce the number 52 into a single integer, we get 5 + 2 = 7. And, there are 7 days / week.
There are 4 suits — Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, and Spades, and there are 4 Seasons in the year. There are 13 “cards” in each suit from Ace – King and there are 13 weeks in each of the 4 seasons. There are also 13 lunar cycles each year of 4 weeks long.
If you add all the values of the “cards” together — Kings are worth 13, Queens 12, Jacks 11 and Aces 1 — then you get the 4 suits multiplied by (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12+13) = 364. All of the cards of all 4 suits add up to 364.
There are 365 1/4 days each year. And, the Joker is the anomaly that makes up the remainder. The Joker is worth 1 1/4 or himself plus all 4 suits together divided by the 4 suits he represents.
So, the deck of “cards” is really an abstract representation of our calendar year. It symbolically depicts the cycles the Earth makes around the Sun each year. It shows the life cycles of the Earth and our place upon it.
Now, imagine for a moment that the deck as a binding on one side. It is a little book of symbols and numbers that represents the cycles of our life. If you take the binding off, as we have it, then we have the loose leaves of a book. It is an open book that symbolically depicts our life on Earth. It is the Book of Life.
This Book was known in ancient esoteric spiritual societies. It forms the basis of Kabbalah and Hermetic philosophy. The Biblical writers were well aware of it. There are more than 20 references in the Bible to the Book of Life.
